A couple days ago i went into gamestop, and i saw a toy this steve's beard, and he had an actual smile with the beard. Welp now steve is ruined for me. I see it as a smile but i'm pretty mojang meant for it to be a beard!

I just see it as he is smiling because he sees this rather spectacular blocky world, where your adventures are.
The original steve skin had a beard.
The beardless version of steve, which appeared after beta update, and the bearded version which was before. Developer mojang has updated the character designs for both steve and alex for the first time. If you want to talk about every other minecraft skin, look at the old human without the beard. It looks like a goatee, and it will always look like a goatee to me.
I always thought it was a smile. I've heard others call it a mouth. The default skin in game does not have a beard. Now that we have a character creator.
I've always wondered what people thought the dark area of the default minecraft skin's face was.
Besides, imagining it as a smile makes it seem like an otherwise intelligently designed and. I’ve never been able to see the beard as anything but a smile. I've been playing minecraft since alpha and always thought steve was just smiling, but i've been reading the excellent ask enderbro and now that i look at steve and i'm thinking. That beard has not been present in minecraft itself for a some. Even though it's a beard, looks a ton like a smiley face. But if it's smile, it's very creepy. I know its supposed to be a beard, but my brain just doesn’t interpret the pixels that way

All of the other mobs have a 'chin,' why would steve be different. It looks like a beard, if it was a smile they would have placed it up one pixel and probably cut off the corners. Oh look he's smiling! [deleted] i voted smile just. I too am still confused about whether he has a smile or beard.
I always saw it as a beard. For a long time, the marketing of minecraft and even his character in super smash bros. It's always been a beard. Apparently many years after it still doesn't sink in.

There has been rumours that steve's face is based lightly on jeb's actual face, so i'm guessing it's. After doing a little more research into older skins, it looks a lot more like a beard than a smile previously (also, they apparently really cleared up steve's complexion).
Minecraft's default player skin steve has finally regrown its original beard, after 13 years.
