I've been playing minecraft since alpha and always thought steve was just smiling, but i've been reading the excellent ask enderbro and now that i look at steve and i'm thinking. It's always been a beard. Ultimate featured steve with a small beard.

Minecraft Brought Back Steve's Beard And Fans Can't Get Enough
Minecraft's default player skin steve has finally regrown its original beard, after 13 years.
I just see it as he is smiling because he sees this rather spectacular blocky world, where your adventures are endless.

No humanoid minecraft skin has the mouth at the bottom of the face. Can you watch a 3 hour video explaining the history of minecraft and how thats not a smile, but a beard? But if it's smile, it's very creepy. I always thought it was a smile.
Although whilst i know for a fact it's a beard/goatee, i just can't unsee a smile. Welp now steve is ruined for me. A couple days ago i went into gamestop, and i saw a toy this steve's beard, and he had an actual smile with the beard. After doing a little more research into older skins, it looks a lot more like a beard than a smile previously (also, they apparently really cleared up steve's complexion). Notice how recently enough, he doesn't have the smile anymore.
I always saw it as a beard. If you want to talk about every other minecraft skin, look at the old human without the beard. All the evidence points to it being a beard. I've heard others call it a mouth.
I know it's a beard, but my childish brain was always thinking:
It looks like a goatee, and it will always look like a goatee to me.
