Golden age combat is here to save minecraft's combat by serving as a faithful recreation of minecraft 1.8's old combat mechanics for modern versions without any compromises. Golden age aims to provide faction based pvp without forcing the players to live in ugly obsidian boxes and metagame hard. Personally for me my preference is beta 1.6.6, as 1.7.3 feels a little too new.

Personally, i think b1.8 was the end of the golden age for me:

However, i assumed that the golden age consisted of versions of minecraft after beta 1.7 but before official release 1.7 (i.e. I would say the golden age for minecraft, was around beta 1.7.3. This modpack brings minecraft beta 1.7.3 to minecraft. I do agree with the consensus that “old” minecraft is beta 1.7 and that old minecraft ends there.
