Go along the vanilla minecraft progression for a little while until you first go mining. Most minecraft worlds are mostly made out of different stone variants. These little stone fairies will spawn in carrying an item, and will get startled if you get too close to them without sneaking and holding a glow shroom to tempt them. I think it killed a stoneling.
I have tried sneaking with nothing in hand, pickarang, holding a diamond, nothing has worked.
I think the best advice here is to find them on vanilla minecraft biomes. Tamed stonelings can hold items you give them, eat stone (they love it!), and follow you if you hold a glow shroom.
